Yuan Zhen’s Floorball Experience in Denmark

One of our Dolphins, Yuan Zhen, left us mid-league last season to start her school exchange in Denmark. One of our fastest runners (in dispute because Wanyi just informed me she was first, not you) in our team, she decided to join a floorball team after we expressed our concern that she would pursue her passion for dance and never come back to us. Yuan Zhen is not fond of socialising and making friends so that was a real consequence.

This is her story 😀

Being on an exchange in Denmark, I decided to take on the challenge to pursue my interest towards floorball. It has really been an enjoyable experience joining Lyngby Floorball Forening, a Danish floorball team. Initially, I was worried that I would not be able to understand the coach and the terms used in trainings.

However, all these concerns were redundant. Training was conducted in English and even though the terms used were slightly different as compared to those that were used in Singapore, it was not difficult to understand with demonstrations before practising the play-ups. Also, I am thankful for the assistance and guidance provided by the other team members to help me integrate with the team and improve my floorball skills.

The team that I am participating in plays in the second best division in Denmark and takes part in competition that is similar to the Singapore Floorball League. I definitely learnt a lot from the different ‘style’ of playing and gained experiences from the matches that I took part in.

I had fun training with the team and they included me in their festivals which were new to me. It is a tradition to celebrate festivals such as Halloween in Denmark where we were encouraged to dress up. On the night before Halloween, my coach and a few of my Danish teammates went for training all dressed up. It was interesting to see how the same festivals are being celebrated differently in different countries.

Overall, I had a great time training with the Danish team. Like Singapore, floorball is a relatively new sport in Denmark. It is an eye-opening experience playing for a team with different culture and team dynamics and seeing how the floorball scene has been growing worldwide.
